On the 12th of August, I visited the Boorowa Agricultural Research Station (BARS) with Dr Susie Sprague and her team. The aim of this one-day tour was to take data on the germination of commercial canola cultivars that are growing in the BARS field with high blackleg inoculum. For the first time, I witnessed infected canola cotyledons with blackleg ascospores and also learned how to collect data in the field. This is a good experience for my project as I have started to screen my gene-edited canola lines under blackleg stress in the glasshouse.

On the 11th of September, I had the opportunity to visit the Boorowa Agriculture Research Station (BARS) of CSIRO. Many thanks to the CSIRO team for hosting and organising such a valuable event. During the visit, the team introduced their research at BARS and demonstrated some of the advanced equipment they use, including portable soil moisture detectors and drones for large-scale monitoring of plant biomass. We also toured the seven-year long-term field trial designed to assess how different crop rotations and planting combinations influence soil characteristics and crop yield. The team also shared their work on canola blackleg disease and wheat dwarf trials. It was an insightful and memorable trip, and I am grateful to CSIRO for the opportunity to learn from their research.

I recently visited the Boorowa Agricultural Research Station (BARS) and was amazed by the scale of their field trials.
It was inspiring to see the opportunities for students to gain hands-on field experience, meet the dedicated team behind the research, and explore potential collaborations. Exciting to witness how digital tools and best practices are shaping the future of agricultural research!
